Iranian leaders presented projected Democratic victories in the US House of Representatives and Senate as a rejection of the war led by Donald Trump. Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf nevertheless warned that the risk of further US strikes persisted, according to Associated Press and Reuters.
Iran on Wednesday 4 November 2026 presented projected Republican defeats in the US midterm elections as a rejection of the war led by Donald Trump, while fearing further US strikes, according to Bénin Web TV and two Iranian officials cited by Reuters.
Associated Press and Reuters projections show the Democrats winning the House of Representatives and the Senate after the 3 November vote. Iranian Parliament speaker and Tehran negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X that American voters had “said no to war” and called on Washington to heed this message.
Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei nevertheless said that a change of majority in Congress would not end US hostility towards Iran. Two senior officials cited by Reuters fear that Donald Trump may seek to make up for his electoral setback with a new military operation, as mediators try to secure an agreement.
The reaction came after Donald Trump accepted the Republican defeat in the midterm elections on 4 November and then attributed it to the war in Iran. The conflict began on 28 February with US and Israeli strikes against Iran, while incidents continue to be reported around the Strait of Hormuz.
