Donald Trump acknowledged the Republican defeat in the US midterm elections and promised to work with Democrats. The president had previously said that the war in Iran had contributed to his party’s setback, according to statements reported by the New York Times, Fox News and Truth Social.
US President Donald Trump announced that he would accept the Democrats’ victory in the 3 November midterm elections, after threatening not to recognise their success. “We should be able to find a way to agree,” he told the New York Times, according to Mediacongo. He also congratulated his opponents, while recalling that he had veto power in the US Congress.
Donald Trump initially rejected the idea that the election had represented a personal repudiation, telling Fox News that he was not a candidate and that he would have won “by a lot” had he appeared on the ballot. He later acknowledged that the war in Iran had contributed “in part” to the Republican defeat, according to Mediacongo. Democrats notably won Senate seats in Texas, South Carolina and Kansas, where Donald Trump had won by more than ten points in the 2024 presidential election.
This acknowledgement came after Democrats took control of both houses of Congress, announced on 4 November in midterm election results. It followed Donald Trump attributing part of the Republican defeat to the war in Iran, also reported on 4 November.
