Ilhan Omar has been re-elected to a fifth term in the United States House of Representatives with 263,166 votes, or 76.5% of the vote, according to Weekend Post. The Democrat, elected in a Minneapolis constituency, defeated Republican John Nagel, who received 55,805 votes (16.2%), and independent DeVelle Jackson, who received 24,215 votes (7%).
The gap between Ilhan Omar and her main opponent was about 207,000 votes. The victory came after a campaign during which President Donald Trump publicly attacked her and supported the examination of her finances by the Justice Department and Congress, Weekend Post reports.
The outlet claims that a search carried out at the representative’s home in Washington about three weeks before the vote led to the seizure of her phone, computers, notebooks and passport. Her family also allegedly received subpoenas, while administration officials reportedly considered the possibility of revoking her citizenship and deporting her. Weekend Post specifies that Ilhan Omar has not been charged with any crime and that no public evidence of wrongdoing has been presented.
The vote was held after Trump and the Democrats held their final rallies, organised on 2 November before the US midterm elections.
