Trump retains powers despite Democratic Congress

Donald Trump remains US president and retains military command and control of the federal administration despite the Democrats taking control of Congress. They will nevertheless be able to control committees, investigate his administration and influence public spending, according to an analysis by Aboubacar Sacko published by Visionguinee.
The Democrats’ victory in the 3 November midterm elections deprives Donald Trump of control of the US Congress, but the president retains his executive powers until the end of his term in January 2029. He remains commander-in-chief of the armed forces, runs the federal administration and conducts US foreign policy, according to Visionguinee.
The Democratic majority in the House of Representatives will allow them to control the main committees, investigate the administration and summon government officials. Lawmakers will also be able to initiate impeachment proceedings.
In the Senate, Democrats will be able to delay or block certain presidential appointments, including those of ministers, ambassadors, senior federal officials and judges. They will also take part in approving international treaties and judging any impeachment proceedings.
The change in majority follows the Democrats taking control of both chambers of Congress, announced on 4 November. Donald Trump then accepted the Republican defeat, while attributing it to the war in Iran.
