Women hold 30.5% of management positions in companies, according to an International Labour Organization survey conducted in 99 countries. The proportion has risen from around 24% 30 years ago, but the organisation is calling on companies to better tackle structural barriers, Reuters reports.

Women hold 30.5% of management positions worldwide, according to an International Labour Organization (ILO) survey covering thousands of companies in 99 countries, reported by Reuters.

The proportion was around 24% 30 years ago, despite progress in women’s education. Jae-Hee Chang, an ILO labour relations specialist, said their potential remained underused, even though the number of women business leaders is increasing.

The ILO report also notes a decline in the implementation of measures supporting women, particularly maternity leave, which the organisation considers effective. It calls on companies to tackle structural barriers to career advancement and take account of the unequal distribution of family responsibilities.
