Democrats seek tougher artificial intelligence rules

US Democratic lawmakers want binding safeguards for artificial intelligence, including public approval for advanced models and restrictions on political deepfakes. The plan could break with Donald Trump’s preference for technology-sector self-regulation as security and electoral risks grow, reports Business Day Nigeria.
US Democratic lawmakers are preparing proposals to strengthen federal regulation of artificial intelligence, including prior government authorisation for advanced models, rules for political deepfakes and limits on virtual companion applications. These proposals could gain influence after the Democrats took control of Congress, reports Business Day Nigeria.
Democratic Representative Crow believes that President Donald Trump’s administration cannot leave technology companies to manage artificial intelligence risks on their own. He wants to slow some developments to allow time to establish safeguards, he told Foreign Policy.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy identified three priorities: banning artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes in election campaigns or requiring them to be labelled; limiting or banning virtual companion applications considered potentially dangerous for children; and requiring advanced models to receive government approval before being made available to the public.
The change in the majority would give Democrats greater control over Congress’s legislative agenda from January 2027. Any legislation would nevertheless have to be approved by Donald Trump, who could also veto it, according to Business Day Nigeria.
