Republican candidates backed by Donald Trump lost several decisive Senate races in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas and Michigan. The defeats helped Democrats take control of the Senate and showed the limits of the US president’s electoral influence, according to the Daily Maverick.
Candidates backed by US President Donald Trump lost several decisive Senate races on 3 November, allowing Democrats to take control of the Senate, the Daily Maverick reports. Democrats Annie Andrews, Roy Cooper, James Talarico and Abdul El-Sayed respectively defeated Trump-backed Republican candidates in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas and Michigan.
Abdul El-Sayed’s defeat of Mike Rogers will make him the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate. In Texas, James Talarico won a seat that Democrats had not captured since 1988. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews flipped a state that had not elected a Democratic senator since 1998 and that Donald Trump had won by 18 points in 2024.
The results confirm the Democrats’ control of both chambers of Congress, announced on 4 November. They came after a campaign during which Republicans were considered at risk of losing both chambers.
