An influx of nationals from several countries was reported on Wednesday 4 November at the border between Mali and Guinea, heading towards the Bamako district, the Centre for Crisis Coordination and Management (CECOGEC) announced in a statement from the Interministerial Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management.
The Malian authorities have planned to receive these people and arrange their transport to their countries of origin. CECOGEC linked their arrival to measures taken by the Guinean authorities to end illegal and illicit gold panning in Guinea.
The statement was issued after an emergency meeting at Mali’s Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, chaired by the secretary-general. CECOGEC called on the population to remain calm and asked for its cooperation with the Armed and Security Forces.
Mali announced these measures the day after Burkina Faso began arranging the return of nationals expelled from Guinea, reported on 4 November in Burkina Faso organises return of thousands of nationals expelled from Guinea.
