At least four people, including a clergyman, were killed on Tuesday in an attack allegedly carried out by armed herders against the community of Abeda Shitile, in Gaambe-Tiev district, Benue State, Nigeria. Eight other residents were injured, according to a resident quoted by Punch.

The attackers allegedly opened fire at around 5pm as traders were leaving the market, then continued shooting for more than two hours while moving through the community. The bodies were taken to a local mortuary and the injured were admitted to a health facility, according to the resident.

The Benue State Police gave a different death toll, however. Its spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Police Peter Aondongu, said that five people were injured in the attack and that three of them died while being transferred to hospital, while two others were receiving treatment there, Punch reports.
