US Consul General Brandon Hudspeth wants to strengthen trade between the United States and Nigeria, including by opening the US market further to Nigerian creators. He raised the prospect at a meeting in Lagos, according to the US consulate cited by Premium Times.

The United States wants to increase trade with Nigeria by opening its market further to Nigerian creators and using the country as a gateway to the African market, according to the US Consulate in Lagos, cited by Premium Times. The consulate believes Nigerian designers can expand their activities there, while US retailers could use Nigeria to access other markets on the continent.

The position was presented at an event held at the residence of the US consul general in Lagos. It comes as Nigeria’s customs service has strengthened trade cooperation with Washington and the United States has suspended South Africa and Rwanda from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which grants trade preferences to certain African countries.
