AngloGold Ashanti and Endeavour Mining are organising the first edition of the West Africa Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Competition (WAMRERC 2026) in Obuasi, Ghana, a competition focused on emergency responses in mines. Teams from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Senegal are taking part in the five-day event, reports MyJoyOnline.
The tests assess the teams’ technical abilities in dealing with mining incidents and are intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and cooperation among industry professionals in West Africa. The organisers also want to create a regional network capable of supporting coordinated responses during emergencies.
Samuel Boakye Pobee, managing director of AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine, called on participants to use the competition to strengthen their skills, build lasting partnerships and improve the protection of workers and communities. Kenneth Ashigbey, managing director of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, also asked the teams to identify their weaknesses and improve their preparedness for rescue operations, according to MyJoyOnline.
