Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has called on the Black Stars’ interim staff to select more Ghana-based players for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia. Stephen Frimpong Manso believes Ghana must win at home, according to their comments to Asempa FM.
Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has called on the Black Stars’ interim technical team to select more players from the local league for the two-legged 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie against Somalia. He believes the coaches have the necessary experience to trust these players, he said on Asempa FM, quoted by 3News.
Lamptey recalled that the national team included more Ghana-based players in his day. He urged the coaches not to hesitate to select the best players from the domestic league, even if they are fewer in number than players based in Europe, according to 3News.
The interim team is led in particular by Ibrahim Tanko, pending the appointment of a permanent coach. Ghana are due to face Somalia twice at home, on 12 and 16 November, according to Ghanaian media reports. Former international Stephen Frimpong Manso, for his part, said Ghana had to win both matches whatever squad was selected, while urging the team not to underestimate the progress of Somali football, 3News reports.
The comments come after Ghana had placed the Black Stars under an interim coach in October, following the departure of Carlos Queiroz. The Portuguese coach left his post after two defeats in September.
