Ghanaian economist Adu Sarkodie believes the government failed to honour the 2026 budget’s growth commitments and limited investment in infrastructure and public services. In an interview on TV3, he said fiscal policy had become restrictive again by mid-year and called for different measures in the 2027 budget, according to 3News.
Economist Adu Sarkodie, a lecturer at the University of Ghana, believes that Ghana’s fiscal policy became conservative again in mid-2026, despite promises of an expansionary budget. He said on TV3’s Business Focus programme that the government had refocused on fiscal consolidation, as in 2025, according to 3News.
Adu Sarkodie says investment spending on roads, railways, aviation, water, electricity, housing, health and education has been largely neglected. In his view, this approach contributed to excessively restrictive fiscal and monetary policies, which curbed growth despite overall macroeconomic stability in 2026.
For the 2027 national budget, the economist called on the government to slow the pace of fiscal consolidation and prioritise public investment capable of supporting economic activity and improving living conditions.
