Congolese national MP Venance Eyanga Mboyo has asked Prime Minister Judith Suminwa to abolish excise duties on plastic products in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He made the proposal during National Assembly debates on the 2027 finance bill, according to Desk Eco.
Eyanga Mboyo challenged the relevance of the tax given the nature of the products concerned. He believes that excise duties should primarily target products whose consumption poses health risks, rather than serving solely to increase public revenue.
The 2027 draft budget, valued at 56.930 trillion Congolese francs, or about $24.8 billion, was deemed admissible on 30 October after two days of debates between the government and MPs. Discussions focused on the credibility of forecasts, revenue mobilisation and the quality of public spending. The Assembly had also examined funding for elections in the Congolese 2027 budget.
