The government of Equatorial Guinea inaugurated a tuna factory, the Annobón Hotel and housing for military personnel on Saturday in Annobón, at a ceremony chaired by Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue on behalf of the head of state, according to Real Equatorial Guinea. The facilities are part of a programme of 48 projects representing investment of around 348 billion CFA francs on the island.
Built and operated by Pesconor, the tuna factory covers nearly 2,000 square metres. It includes cold rooms, cutting and cleaning areas, as well as cooking, sterilisation and packaging facilities. It will be able to produce up to 1,500 cans a day, 200 to 300 kilograms of smoked fish and about one tonne of frozen fish.
The factory also plans to turn its organic waste into poultry feed. Twenty-seven Equatoguinean technicians have been trained in processing fishery products, maintaining industrial refrigeration and operating canning machinery. The project is to prioritise employment and ongoing training for Annobón residents.
The Annobón Hotel, located in Ajabo near Palia beach, has presidential rooms, suites and standard rooms. It is expected to increase the island's accommodation capacity and support tourism linked to its natural sites, according to Real Equatorial Guinea.
