Equatorial Guinea’s Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has asked Gepetrol Servicios to prepare a plan to strengthen fuel distribution after recent shortages. The strategy includes increasing purchases, recovering storage tanks and building new facilities, while a national refinery is already planned from 2027, according to Equatorial Guinean outlet Realequatorialguinea.
Equatorial Guinea’s Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has asked Gepetrol Servicios to draw up a plan to strengthen its role in fuel distribution and prevent shortages, reports Realequatorialguinea. The instruction was given at a meeting in Malabo attended by Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua and officials from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, Mines and Electricity.
The plan calls for a substantial increase in fuel purchases in the short term. In the medium term, it aims to recover strategic storage tanks currently leased to Tradex and build higher-capacity infrastructure. In the long term, the government is considering a national refinery to supply the domestic market and partner countries in the sub-region.
Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue described the recent shortage as an “unacceptable failure of the system”, saying the simultaneous unavailability of fuel from three operators raised questions about supply management. The strategy aims to make Gepetrol Servicios the central channel for purchases by companies in the sector and regional partners.
The instruction follows Equatorial Guinea’s repossession of fuel depots leased to Tradex. The recovery of these depots is one of the storage measures cited in the plan.
