The President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, left Malabo on Monday 26 October for Moscow, where he is due to attend the third Russia-Africa summit and its economic and humanitarian forum. The meetings are scheduled for 28 and 29 October at the Expocentre, according to the official Equatorial Guinean media outlet Realequatorialguinea.
Obiang is travelling with the First Lady, Constancia Mangue de Obiang, and a delegation of senior officials. He was invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions are expected to focus in particular on political, economic and humanitarian cooperation, energy and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.
Diplomatic relations between Equatorial Guinea and Russia date back to 7 December 1968. For Malabo, discussions on energy are of particular interest because of the importance of the hydrocarbons industry to the national economy. The summit will bring together African leaders, private-sector representatives and officials from international organisations.
