Ghanaian actor Majid Michel says it is unfair to compare Ghana’s film industry with Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, partly because of the population gap between the two countries. He made the argument in an interview on Y107.9 FM in Accra on 28 October, according to The Ghana Report.
Ghanaian actor Majid Michel says it is unfair to compare Ghana’s film output with that of Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, particularly because of the difference in population between the two countries. He made the case during an interview broadcast on Y107.9 FM in Accra on 28 October.
According to Michel, Nigeria’s larger population gives it a numerical advantage in having more directors, actors and film professionals. He compared the two countries to families of different sizes, arguing that a group of 50 children is statistically more likely to produce more talent than a group of five.
The actor also called on African countries not to measure their progress against nations whose institutions and industries have developed over several centuries. He believes the continent is still building the structures needed to develop fully established sectors.
