Ghanaian President John Mahama called on 30 October for stronger economic cooperation between Ghana and Russia during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit, 3News reports. He said the two countries should move beyond their political relations to deepen economic exchanges.
John Mahama cited trade, investment, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, education, health, science and technology among the areas in which the summit could promote cooperation between Africa and Russia. He also presented Ghana, whose gross domestic product stands at about $120 billion and whose annual growth is close to 6%, as a suitable partner for mutual investment.
The Ghanaian president recalled that Russia recognised Ghana’s independence in 1958, then referred to the visit to Moscow by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, in 1961. He also praised Russian support for decolonisation movements and the provision of Sputnik V vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The meeting took place as part of Mahama’s participation in the Russia-Africa summit, where he had also called for a peaceful resolution to global conflicts in Moscow. On 30 October, the Ghanaian president had also called for better access for African products to the Russian market.
