Ugandan airline Uganda Airlines has launched regular flights to Accra, opening a commercial route between Ghana and East Africa. The Entebbe-Lagos-Accra service will initially operate four times a week, with daily flights envisaged depending on demand, the Ghanaian Times reports.
Uganda Airlines has inaugurated commercial flights to Accra on the Entebbe-Lagos-Accra route, which arrived at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, the Ghanaian Times reports. The Ugandan airline plans to operate four flights a week initially, with the aim of moving to daily flights if demand increases.
Ghanaian Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe said the service confirmed Ghana’s position as a regional aviation hub. He also announced that the committee tasked with proposing a roadmap for a national Ghanaian airline had completed its work and that the government would present the next steps in the project soon.
Ato Girma Wake, chief executive of Uganda Airlines, said the company wanted to work with Ghanaian and African carriers to develop regional routes. The permits granted include fifth-freedom rights, which allow Uganda Airlines to pick up passengers in Ghana and carry them to other destinations.
The Ugandan airline’s arrival comes as Ghana moves forward with plans for its national airline, after the committee tasked with proposing a roadmap completed its work, according to the transport minister.
