Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has promised Russia’s support for Ghana’s application to become a BRICS partner country. He announced his backing on 28 October at a meeting with African ministers and pledged to secure consensus among the founding members, according to the Ghanaian Times.

Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa thanked his Russian counterpart for the support. He is accompanying President John Dramani Mahama to the Russia-Africa Summit, where African ministers held meetings with Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines.

John Dramani Mahama’s government says it wants to maintain Ghana’s non-alignment policy and diversify its development options. The Russian support comes after Ghana prepared its application to join BRICS, announced on 7 October. President Mahama travelled to the Russia-Africa Summit on 26 October to call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, according to his visit to Moscow.
