The Ghanaian government and trade unions have reached an agreement providing for a 9% increase in public sector workers’ pay in 2027, followed by 10% in 2028. The plan, announced by Trades Union Congress secretary-general Joshua Ansah, still needs parliamentary approval, according to Netafrique.
The Ghanaian government and trade unions have agreed to increase public sector workers’ pay by 19% between 2027 and 2028, Joshua Ansah, secretary-general of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), announced. The agreement provides for a 9% increase from 1 January 2027, followed by a 10% rise on 1 January 2028.
In 2027, the increase will comprise an 8% rise in basic pay and a 1% equity allowance. This supplement is intended to reduce disparities in allowances, particularly by targeting the lowest-paid workers, according to Joshua Ansah.
The 10% increase planned for 2028 will be calculated on the wage bill in effect on 31 December 2027. The agreement still needs legislative approval. Joshua Ansah said he believed it would not meet all workers’ expectations, but would help protect household purchasing power amid rising living costs.
