Omoyele Sowore accuses the Ekiti police of downplaying the attack he says he and his associates suffered in Ado-Ekiti, while the command describes an altercation in a restaurant and denies a kidnapping. Daily Post reports that Sowore challenged Commissioner Falade Adegoroye Michael's account; Vanguard says police took him to hospital and opened an investigation.
The Ekiti police say Omoyele Sowore was not kidnapped. According to police spokesperson Sunday Abutu, initial information indicates that the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) had an altercation with individuals in a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti. Police officers rescued him and took him to the police hospital for treatment, where he was being treated for an injury described by the command as minor, Vanguard reports.
Sowore disputes this account and accuses Commissioner of Police Falade Adegoroye Michael of downplaying a violent attack on him and his associates. In a post on X on Friday, he said the commissioner had seen their injuries and rejected the idea that there had been an altercation. He had earlier said that he had been abducted by armed men and did not know where he was, according to Vanguard.
The commissioner ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those involved, the police said. The command also called on the public not to circulate unverified information about an alleged kidnapping.
