Three arrested in Botswana with 20 rough diamonds

Three people appeared in court in Botswana after being arrested on 23 October at The Fields shopping centre, where police say they found 20 rough diamonds. The court remanded them in custody while the investigation establishes, among other things, the stones’ weight and value, The Voice BW reports.

Three Botswana residents were arrested on 23 October in Gaborone with 20 suspected rough diamonds, following a police operation at The Fields Mall, The Voice Botswana reports. George Jeffries, 36, Benjamini Gopolang, 30, and Farai Koitheng, 47, are charged with unlawful possession of uncut diamonds.

The three accused appeared before the Extension II Magistrates’ Court, where their application was postponed while the investigation continued. Magistrate Kamogelo Mmesi ordered that they remain in custody for 14 days, at the request of prosecutor Kalako, who said the weight and value of the stones had not yet been established.

The next hearing is scheduled for 9 November. Investigators are seeking, among other things, to determine how an employee responsible for purchasing, a mechanic and an unemployed person came to be in possession of the diamonds, according to The Voice Botswana.
