Mozambique and the European Union are strengthening military cooperation to improve the capabilities of Mozambican armed forces against terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado province. The EU mission EUMAM MOZ contributes to training and specialised advice for national forces, according to information provided by the European Union.

The European Union and Mozambique are strengthening military cooperation to train and advise the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces against the terrorist threat in Cabo Delgado province, in the north of the country. The subject was discussed at a meeting between Mozambique’s Defence Minister, Cristóvão Chume, EU ambassador Francisco Fontán and the commander of the EU Military Assistance Mission, Sérgio Estrela, according to the European Union.

Discussions focused on the role of the EUMAM MOZ mission in training Mozambican forces and providing specialised advice based on the country’s operational needs. The EU and its member states are also providing technical assistance to strengthen national military capabilities.

The talks also covered the future of the EU mission and the continuation of the security partnership. The EU presents the strengthening of defence capabilities as support for the Mozambican authorities in tackling terrorism and protecting people, essential services and economic activities in affected areas.

The cooperation comes as Cabo Delgado continues to face armed violence. Insurgents abducted several people in Mocímboa da Praia, in the province, on 1 October, according to an earlier report.
