The Ghanaian government is raising from 1.80 to 5 Ghanaian cedis the daily allowance for feeding each inmate. Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang announced the increase in Adansi Fumso, highlighting reforms to improve reintegration and reduce prison overcrowding, according to MyJoyOnline.
The Ghanaian government has increased the daily allowance for feeding Ghana Prisons Service inmates from 1.80 to 5 cedis, Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang announced. She was speaking at the passing-out ceremony for the 33rd, 34th and 35th cadet intakes into the senior officer corps in Adansi Fumso, Ashanti Region, according to MyJoyOnline.
Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang presented the increase as a measure intended to improve detention conditions, rehabilitation and the operational capacity of the prison service. The government also plans to complete the Nsawam remand centre, modernise infirmaries and bring the Damongo camp prison into service.
The vice-president cited the Community Service Act and the Prisons Regulations adopted in 2026 as instruments intended to reduce prison overcrowding. For eligible inmates, they allow community service under supervision or for part of a sentence to be served in the community, subject to certain conditions.
The rehabilitation programme also includes prison farms supported by the provision of tractors, fertiliser and seeds. Places on the One Million Coders programme have also been allocated to prison officers, their relatives and inmates so that they can acquire digital skills. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang called on families, employers and religious leaders to avoid stigmatising former inmates.
