Nigerian senators said Godswill Akpabio would retain the Senate presidency after the 2027 elections, provided their party wins. The political projection was supported by a majority vote in the chamber, according to Tribune Online.

Nigerian senators have backed the reappointment of Godswill Obot Akpabio as Senate president after the 11th legislature is inaugurated, scheduled for June 2027. Senate majority leader Tahir Monguno said there would be “no vacancy” in the chamber’s presidency and claimed that most current senators would regain their seats, according to Tribune Online.

Senator Cyril Fasuyi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member for Ekiti North, also said the position had already been allocated to Akpabio and would not be open to competition. A majority of lawmakers present supported the motion put to a vote by Akpabio.

The projection nevertheless rests on the assumption that the APC will win the presidential election and control the entire National Assembly in 2027. Akpabio said criticism of his presidency was driven by competing political ambitions for the position of Senate president.
