Members of two Seventh-day Adventist churches cleaned the grounds of Wa Municipal Hospital, where outdoor areas had become overgrown. Administrator Joseph Adongo said the facility lacked staff assigned to outdoor maintenance and that workers were sometimes redeployed to indoor cleaning and the kitchen.
Members of the Wa Central and Peggrie Estate Seventh-day Adventist churches weeded and swept the grounds of Wa Municipal Hospital in Ghana to improve hygiene at the facility. The work took place on a Sunday, MyJoyOnline reports.
Hospital administrator Joseph Adongo said the facility had no staff assigned to outdoor cleaning. He explained that contract workers responsible for the grounds were sometimes reassigned to indoor cleaning or the kitchen when employees left their posts.
Wa Central District Pastor Whaley Asonre Aboungo said the church had chosen the hospital because of the health risks associated with poor hygiene, particularly for vulnerable patients. He also called on the authorities to install public rubbish bins in strategic locations.
Kanyiti Razak, the municipal environmental health officer, called for a circular waste management system and waste separation at source. Adventist leaders are to assess the parts of the grounds that have not yet been cleaned before deciding whether to return the following month.
