Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in western Uganda is limiting the number of caregivers and visitors in its wards to reduce overcrowding, improve patient safety and prevent infections, its spokesperson, Halson Kagure, announced.
Ordinary wards allow one caregiver for stable patients and two for patients in critical condition. The intensive care unit and emergency department allow only one caregiver per patient, while caregivers are barred from the resuscitation room. Staff may also ask them to leave during medical procedures, according to Halson Kagure.
Visits are now limited to three daily time slots: 6am to 7am, 1pm to 2pm and 6pm to 7pm. Daily meetings with patients, posters and monitoring by department heads and security officers are intended to encourage compliance with the rules, according to the hospital management.
