Heavy rain and strong winds damaged homes, crops, roads, schools and electricity infrastructure in Uganda’s Tororo district, leaving hundreds of households without homes or livelihoods, reports Nile Post. District chairman John Okea called on the government to provide urgent assistance.

The winds tore roofs from several homes and uprooted trees. Families took shelter with relatives or neighbours, while Tororo municipality was among the worst-affected areas, according to mayor Benard Ochieng. The rain also washed murram off several roads, making access to affected communities more difficult.

Rubongi Secondary School lost the roofs of its laboratory, classrooms, food store and kitchen. Its board of governors estimated repair costs at nearly 300 million Ugandan shillings. Winds and falling trees also damaged electricity poles and transformers in several parts of the district.
