The price of a one-kilogram loaf has reached 6,000 to 6,500 Ugandan shillings in Uganda, following an increase announced by the national bakers’ association. Bakers cite the rising cost of wheat flour and diesel and are asking the government to intervene, Tuko reports.

The price of a one-kilogram loaf has reached between 6,000 and 6,500 Ugandan shillings at retail outlets, after a revision announced by the Uganda Bakers Association, which represents the country’s bakers. The factory-gate price has risen from 5,000 to 5,500 shillings, Tuko reports, citing association officials.

For a 500-gram loaf, the factory-gate price has risen from 2,500 to 3,000 shillings, while the retail price is expected to be between 3,300 and 3,500 shillings. Gaster Lule Ntake, president of the Uganda Bakers Association, explained that manufacturers had absorbed the rise in costs for as long as possible before revising their prices, according to the Daily Monitor, cited by Tuko.

The association mainly attributes the increase to the rising cost of wheat flour and diesel, used for production machinery and distribution vehicles. It is asking the government to intervene over the cost of inputs and calling on consumers to adapt to the new prices, Tuko reports.
