Ugandan opposition leader Joel Ssenyonyi has asked the government to explain its efforts to locate and repatriate the remains of 11 Ugandans killed in the Russia-Ukraine war, while another 16 remain missing. A letter from the embassy in Moscow gives these figures, Nile Post reports.

Ugandan opposition leader Joel Ssenyonyi has asked the government to explain its efforts to repatriate the bodies of 11 Ugandans killed in the war between Russia and Ukraine. He cited a letter from Uganda’s embassy in Moscow, according to Nile Post.

The letter, dated 17 October 2026, says another 16 Ugandans are missing and presumed dead, with their bodies not found. Russian authorities provided the information to Uganda’s ambassador in Moscow, Moses Kizige.

Ssenyonyi also asked for updates on Ugandans still involved in the conflict and questioned the recruitment conditions for those who reportedly went to Russia for civilian jobs before being sent to fight. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa said he had spoken with Uganda’s ambassadors in Moscow and Berlin. He added that confidential efforts were under way and that Vice-President Jessica Alupo was due to raise the issue during her visit to Moscow.

The request follows the publication on 29 October of figures showing 27 Ugandans recruited by Russia dead or missing.
