A four-month pregnant woman, aged 35, was killed with blows from a chair allegedly by her husband at around 11am on Sunday 1 November in Talatamaty, a neighbourhood of Fianarantsoa, according to the police investigating the case. The baby she was carrying also died. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested by police officers who arrived at the scene.
The couple, originally from Sakaraha, had been staying with relatives in Fianarantsoa for about a week. An argument over a lack of money began on Saturday and continued the following day. The man first sent their five-year-old child outside before locking himself in the house with his wife, investigators said.
Witnesses alerted by the screams notified traffic police officers. Residents who gathered around the house prevented the suspect from fleeing. Local police had taken measures to prevent a popular backlash, while the suspect was due to be brought before the court on 3 November, according to the authorities.
