A rockfall killed six people on Friday at an artisanal gold-mining site in Dioulafoundou, in the rural commune of Nouga, Mali. The victims, all Burkinabè nationals, were working in an artisanal mine gallery 12 metres high and eight metres wide, according to a report by the Malian News and Advertising Agency (AMAP).
The circle prefect, security forces, civil protection services and a mechanical excavator went to the site to coordinate the rescue operation and offer their condolences to traditional authorities, according to AMAP. The prefect blamed the failure of local monitoring committees responsible for preventing this kind of accident.
The accident follows an appeal issued on 6 October by the authorities in Kangaba to remove heavy machinery used in illegal gold mining. The measure had already addressed the risks associated with artisanal gold mining in the region, according to Kangaba’s appeal against heavy machinery.
