Malawi says it has dismantled human trafficking and drug trafficking networks operating with Mozambique, while closing regional transit routes. Malawi’s Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito announced the operations after four days of bilateral talks in Blantyre, according to the Nyasa Times.
Malawi and Mozambique have announced stronger security cooperation against human trafficking, drug trafficking and difficulties in managing their border, Peter Mukhito, Malawi’s Minister of Homeland Security, said on Wednesday. The commitments were made at the end of four days of discussions in Blantyre, during the 17th session of the Malawi-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security.
Peter Mukhito’s office attributed several operations against cross-border trafficking to him, including the dismantling of networks operating between the two countries and the closure of transit routes linking Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. The minister called for the resolutions adopted to lead to action to prevent threats and protect populations.
The commitments follow meetings devoted to cross-border crimes between Malawi and Mozambique, held on 2 November, followed by coordination announced on 3 November in the fight against trafficking.
