Mutharika threatens those suspected of causing power cuts in Malawi

Malawian President Peter Mutharika has threatened action against those allegedly deliberately disrupting the restoration of electricity. He says persistent power cuts should end by December, according to a statement made on 31 October in Lilongwe, The Maravi Post reports.

Malawi’s President, Peter Mutharika, threatened on Saturday 31 October to take action against people he accused of deliberately contributing to power cuts in the country, The Maravi Post reports. He did not name those targeted or provide evidence to support his accusations.

Mutharika also said persistent power cuts would end by December 2026. He was speaking at the presidential palace in Lilongwe after returning from a 25-day private stay in South Africa, according to the Malawian media outlet.

The remarks come as Malawi faces shortages and recurrent power cuts. On 4 October, Peter Mutharika was called on to respond to shortages in the country, and the opposition later accused him, on 22 October, of worsening the situation.
