Japan is donating nine road-construction machines worth 400 million yen, or around $2.7 million, to Lilongwe City Council. The equipment is to be handed over to the Malawian capital to speed up road rehabilitation, as part of Japanese support for the Nacala Corridor, reports The Nation Malawi.
Japan has granted Malawi a donation of road equipment worth 4.4 billion kwacha, or approximately 400 million yen or $2.7 million, for maintaining roads in Lilongwe, according to Malawian daily The Nation. The equipment will be handed over to Lilongwe City Council after the agreement is signed in Lilongwe on Friday by Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha and Japan’s ambassador, Yasushi Naito.
The consignment includes nine heavy machines intended to rehabilitate roads more quickly. The minister requested similar support for the city councils of Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu, while the Accountant General will oversee the management of public assets. Yasushi Naito linked the donation to Japan’s Nacala Corridor development initiative, which aims to improve transport infrastructure and regional trade. Roads account for around 90% of the movement of people and goods in Malawi, he added.
