The count in South Africa’s municipal elections is progressing slowly in Limpopo’s farming areas, where 1% of votes had been counted by 3am on Thursday. The Electoral Commission plans to publish provisional results on Friday, while 49 districts had been declared in the Western Cape, according to SABC News.
Only 1% of votes in South Africa’s municipal elections had been counted by 3am on Thursday, while counting was progressing in small farming constituencies in Limpopo, SABC News reports.
The province set up 110 polling stations in these areas after farmworkers complained that stations had been too far away in previous elections. Limpopo Electoral Operations Manager Itumeleng Seanego said the verification and recording of results were proceeding normally.
In the Western Cape, about 3% of the 1,623 electoral districts had completed their count by 2am, and 49 districts had been declared. Operations were under way in 15 of the province’s 30 municipalities, where the Democratic Alliance was recording initial gains. The South African Electoral Commission expects provisional results on Friday.
The count comes as counting continues in KwaZulu-Natal, where 546 polling stations remain involved in electoral operations.
