Mali’s Transitional President, Army General Assimi Goïta, is expected in Ouagadougou on Thursday 5 November 2026 for a friendship and working visit with Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré, according to the Agence d’information du Burkina, cited by Netafrique. The discussions are expected to cover bilateral cooperation, security issues, economic exchanges and consultation within the AES, an alliance of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Burkina Faso’s Directorate-General of State Protocol, cited by La Nouvelle Tribune, confirmed the visit and said the two leaders would discuss matters related to cooperation within the AES. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have launched joint initiatives in defence, the economy, diplomacy and social affairs to harmonise their programmes and policies, the outlet said.

The visit comes after Assimi Goïta’s participation in the third Russia-Africa Summit, held in Moscow on 28 and 29 October, followed by his return to Bamako on 1 November. The Malian leader had already travelled to Burkina Faso on 25 June 2024 to discuss the fight against terrorism, socioeconomic development and the sovereignty of Sahel states with Ibrahim Traoré.

Ibrahim Traoré was appointed president-in-office of the Confederation of Sahel States in 2025, succeeding Assimi Goïta, La Nouvelle Tribune reports.
