The traditional Kakoundja necklace, made from tubular beads and originating from the Teke people in south-eastern Gabon, is attracting visitors to the Gabonese pavilion at the 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, according to the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP). Visitors try it on and regularly take photos as souvenirs.
The Gabon General Commission for Exhibitions (CGEG) says interest in the Kakoundja had already emerged during the Osaka Kansai 2025 World Expo in Japan. Its presentation in Shanghai therefore extends the international showcasing of this element of Gabonese heritage, according to the AGP.
