Two EMAE water reservoirs in Madalena have security problems, with damaged or missing gates and facilities accessible to outsiders. Water sector director Nilton Lima acknowledged the delay in repairs and promised action soon, according to Rádio Somos Todos Primos.

The facilities filmed by Rádio Somos Todos Primos (RSTP) have old gates, some without locks, making it easier for outsiders to enter the sites. One of the two reservoirs no longer had a gate and its surroundings were overgrown with vegetation, according to RSTP.

EMAE water director Nilton Lima explained that the guard was on leave and acknowledged that the gates should have been repaired earlier. He said the work would be carried out soon, according to RSTP.

Another water sector official, Valdemiro do Rosário, attributed the condition of the gates to acts of sabotage. He said EMAE had repaired the reservoir gates but that some had subsequently been forced open or torn off, according to RSTP.

Nilton Lima also said that leaving water reservoirs open to the elements was unacceptable. The situation comes as the population calls for access to drinking water and São Tomé and Príncipe recently proposed 1.5 million dobras to strengthen water supply.
