Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema asked China to support local manganese processing, while identifying artificial intelligence, agriculture, fishing and ecotourism as areas for cooperation. The talks with Shanghai’s mayor took place on 3 November, according to an official Gabonese statement.

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema asked China to contribute to the local processing of manganese during a meeting on Tuesday 3 November in Shanghai with the city’s mayor, Zhu Zhongming, according to an official statement. Manganese is one of Gabon’s main export products.

The discussions also covered artificial intelligence, agriculture, fishing and ecotourism, as well as partnerships between Libreville and Shanghai. Oligui Nguema raised the possibility of organising a trade fair to promote Gabonese expertise and said he wanted to attract investment, develop industry and create jobs. The meeting was held as part of his state visit to China, in the presence notably of China’s ambassador to Gabon, Zhou Ping, and Shanghai municipal secretary-general Ma Chunlei.

The request for manganese processing forms part of recent exchanges between Libreville and Beijing on the industrialisation of the bilateral partnership. On 1 November, Gabon presented this approach, and Oligui Nguema then called for the Chinese partnership to be converted into investment on 3 November, at a meeting devoted to Chinese investment.
