A two-year-old child was found dead in a well in the Mbolo 3 neighbourhood of Makokou, in north-eastern Gabon. His family reported him missing after a series of trips to the family home and to an unwell relative’s home, according to the Gabonese Press Agency, citing a family source.

A two-year-old child, identified by the initials C.O.P.E., was found dead in a well on Saturday in the Mbolo 3 neighbourhood of Makokou, in Gabon’s Ogooué-Ivindo province, according to the family, cited by the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP).

The child’s 13-year-old older sister said she returned to the family home after accompanying their sick uncle and noticed that her younger brother was missing. The owners of the well then told her that a child had been found there, according to the account reported by AGP.

The family raised suspicions of sexual violence before the death, although the allegations have not been established. An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the death and identify any possible perpetrators, AGP reports.
