He spoke at the first formal academic year of Gabon’s Conference of Private Grandes Écoles and Universities in Libreville, according to GabonActu.
Gabonese philosopher and emeritus professor Bonaventure Mvé Ondo called for higher education courses to be made more professional and diversified on Friday 30 October, during an inaugural lecture at Libreville North University, reports GabonActu. His address opened the first formal academic year of the institutions belonging to the Conference of Private Grandes Écoles and Universities of Gabon, under the theme “What private higher education for what society?”.
The former vice-rector and rector of Omar Bongo University said that a degree alone no longer guarantees professional integration. He distinguished between a degree, which certifies an academic course, competence, which involves applying knowledge in concrete situations, and employment, which also depends on economic dynamism, investment and the opportunities offered by businesses.
He called for courses also to develop young people’s spirit of initiative, judgement and ability to learn throughout their lives, in order to respond better to changes in the labour market and the economy.
