A South Korean sergeant in his twenties has died after being found unconscious with a serious head injury at a frontline base in Cheorwon. The military and police are investigating the circumstances of his death on 2 November, and have not established its cause, Bénin Web TV reports.

A South Korean army sergeant died on Monday 2 November 2026 after being found with a serious head injury at a frontline unit in Cheorwon, near the border with North Korea. The South Korean military confirmed his death and opened an investigation, Bénin Web TV reports.

The non-commissioned officer, who was in his twenties, was found unconscious on the floor by another soldier at about 7.14am local time in a building at the base. Emergency services were alerted, but he died from his injuries. Military investigators and police are looking into the circumstances.

The death occurred in an area already marked by tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang. On 21 September, three South Korean soldiers were injured in mine explosions south of the Military Demarcation Line. South Korea attributed the mines to North Korean fortification work, which Pyongyang denied.
