More than 50 people were reportedly killed in the attack on Binnari, in Nigeria’s Taraba State, the previous week, according to residents quoted by BBC Hausa. Taraba police put the toll at 48 after 23 additional bodies were found, while attackers looted food and set shops and motorcycles alight.
More than 50 people were killed last week when armed men attacked the Binnari market in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, in Nigeria’s Taraba State, according to residents quoted by BBC Hausa. The attackers arrived after Friday prayers on at least 150 motorcycles, opened fire on traders, stole food supplies and set shops and motorcycles alight.
Residents said the gunmen had surrounded the market before firing in all directions. Several people tried to flee by jumping into a nearby pond, while others were killed in the surrounding forests, according to the account gathered by BBC Hausa.
Taraba police confirmed 48 deaths after 23 additional bodies were found on Sunday. Its spokesperson, Victor Mshelizah, said some victims had drowned while trying to escape the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the operation.
