Livestock Development Commissioner Salim Abdulrahman says the facilities should improve services for herders and help reduce farmer-herder clashes.
The government of Jigawa State in northern Nigeria is investing 4.5 billion naira in the creation of three cattle ranches, according to Livestock Development Commissioner Salim Abdulrahman, quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday. The funding is being drawn from a 17.2 billion-naira allocation for livestock in the 2026 budget.
The ranches will be developed in the grazing reserves of Sankara, in Ringim, and Kashamai, in Kafin Hausa, as well as at Kukar Mekiya, in Kiyawa district. Each will cover 510 hectares and be able to accommodate 3,000 households. Planned facilities include water points, pastures, schools, health facilities, veterinary clinics, markets and electricity. The government particularly wants to reduce clashes between farmers and herders, Abdulrahman said.
The commissioner also announced plans for veterinary clinics in the 27 local government areas, seven zonal clinics and a referral centre, as well as the renovation of existing centres. Mobile veterinary clinics have already been deployed in the 27 areas. Jigawa also plans to allocate 350 million naira for a forthcoming livestock vaccination campaign and is modernising three livestock centres in Gumel, Birniwa and Kagauma.
