Katsina denies link between Yankara incident and Radda rally

The Nigerian state of Katsina says an incident during a Maulud procession in Yankara stemmed from a dispute over the route with security forces, not Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s political rally. It called for an investigation and urged calm, according to Daily Post Nigeria.

The Katsina State Government has rejected any link between the incident during a Maulud procession in Yankara, in Faskari Local Government Area, and Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s campaign rally. In a statement issued on Saturday 31 October, its Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, attributed the incident to a disagreement between participants and security forces over the route, reports Daily Post.

The government said Dikko Umaru Radda had passed through Yankara without incident before travelling to Faskari, where he visited the district head’s palace, inspected renovation work at the local government secretariat and then attended the election rally. It asked security agencies to investigate and urged the media and social media users to verify information that could fuel tensions.

The statement comes amid political and security tensions in Katsina, following violence that injured Radda supporters in Funtua on 28 October and the Nigerian army’s hunt for suspects in the killing of a preacher announced the same day.
