Richard Aisuebogun, former managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, warned that fuel supply disruptions could lead to delays and cancellations and higher airfares. He called for strategic infrastructure to protect the sector from global energy shocks at a summit in Lagos, Vanguard reports.

Richard Aisuebogun, former managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), warned that disruptions to aviation fuel supplies could cause flight delays and cancellations, higher fares and a reduction in routes in the country. He was speaking at the second Nigerian Transport Summit, organised in Lagos by JustAlive Communications Limited.

Aisuebogun cited geopolitical conflicts, supply chain disruptions and trade changes among the factors that could increase the cost of fuel, insurance and transport. As jet fuel accounts for a significant share of airlines’ expenses, price fluctuations and shortages can directly affect their operations. He recalled that in May 2026, higher fuel prices and supply difficulties had already contributed to route adjustments, delays and cancellations in Nigeria, according to Reuters.

The former official also called for sustained investment in runways, terminals, baggage and navigation systems, security, cargo facilities, emergency services, electricity supply and digital tools. He said infrastructure gaps could reduce operational efficiency and the competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
