Francis Atwoli, secretary-general of Kenya’s Central Organisation of Trade Unions, rejects Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid. He accuses outside forces of trying to divide western Kenya’s electorate, according to Tuko, and says the strategy could undermine a regional candidacy in 2032.
Francis Atwoli, secretary-general of Kenya’s Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has rejected Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid. He said the senator was too young and inexperienced to lead Kenya, at a rally in the west of the country, Tuko reports.
Atwoli accused unidentified outside forces of backing Sifuna’s campaign in order to divide western Kenya’s electorate. He said this fragmentation would prevent the region from putting forward a viable presidential candidate and winning support in other regions in the 2032 election.
The trade union leader said he wanted to bring Luhya leaders together around a common political position ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He also said he would rather die than see Sifuna become president, according to Tuko.
Atwoli’s rejection follows the launch of Linda Mwananchi by Edwin Sifuna on 31 October. Sifuna had earlier been presented as the movement’s candidate for the 2027 Kenyan presidential election on 4 October.
